RS-53 (R-470A) the only R-410A DROP-IN with A1 rating for existing equipment

R-410A is the most widely used refrigerant in the domestic air conditioning market since it was introduced as a replacement for the ozone-depleting R-22. However, its high GWP (Global Warming Potential) has always been against it.

The Kigali agreement to the Montreal Protocol is an international agreement designed to phase down the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) with a higher GWP, such as R-410A. In addition, quota reductions within the European Union are hindering the availability of high GWP refrigerants.

GRIT has been providing technical and customized advice and solutions in different markets for more than 20 years. Together with Refrigerant Solutions Ltd., GRIT has carried out the development of R-470A refrigerant, commercially known as RS-53, the only low-GWP R-410A DROP-IN with A1 safety classification (Non-toxic, non-flammable).

RS-53 is a non-azeotropic, non-flammable, 0 ODP (ozone depleting) refrigerant gas blend of HFCs and HFOs with a GWP of only 979, approximately 53% lower than R-410A. It is only compatible with POE synthetic oils and no hardware changes are required for retrofit. Due to its low GWP, the tax on fluorinated gases applied to this product is much lower than R-410A, only 14.69 €/kg, compared to 31.32 €/kg for R-410A.

The following is the data obtained in a case study carried out for the retrofit of a Split air conditions.

Test done at 15ºC (59ºF) ambient temperature

Test done at 30ºC (86ºF) ambient temperature

Benefits shown after the case study:

  • No changes to the Equipment were required to carry out the retrofit. Just change the gas and start working
  • Similar working conditions:
    • Suction / discharge pressure
    • Temperatures
    • Same oil
  • RS-53 has lower heating and cooling capacity, but its consumption is lower than R-410A.
  • Equipment is working with RS-53 since summer 2019 without any maintenance issues.

As presented, RS-53 is a clear substitute for R-410A, which adapts to the current situation offering a much lower global warming potential, reducing considerably the environmental impact; and in the same way allows to increase the life of the Equipment in which it is used.
