The importance of choosing the right refrigerant for refrigeration systems

Choosing the right refrigerant is a key factor in the efficiency and performance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. At a time when sustainability and environmental protection are increasingly important, the selection of the right refrigerant is fundamental both to minimize the environmental impact of this equipment and to ensure its correct operation.

At GRIT we are a leading company in the distribution, storage and development of solutions within the sector. We offer a wide range of high quality products and a team of refrigeration experts who can help you select the most suitable refrigerant in each case. In the following sections, we will go deeper into each of them and provide you with useful information about the characteristics, benefits and possible environmental impacts of each option, with the aim of helping you maximize the efficiency of your systems.

A guide to the types of refrigerants available at GRIT

The refrigerants available at GRIT can be classified into five categories:

  • Fluorinated refrigerants: liquefied gases. They are the most common at present due to their high efficiency and low cost. They are used in a wide variety of thermal conditioning devices, from domestic units to large industrial air conditioning units. However, they have a high global warming potential and can contribute significantly to climate change. The European F-Gas regulation aims to reduce the use of these fluorinated greenhouse gases by 70% by 2030.
  • RS refrigerant. At GRIT we are exclusive manufacturers of the RS range of refrigerants from Refrigerant Solutions Ltd. A greener option compared to conventional fluorinated alternatives, as they have a lower environmental impact and greater energy efficiency. In addition, they are not subject to F-Gas regulation restrictions. They can be used in similar refrigeration and air conditioning systems, although some equipment may require modifications to accommodate them.
  • Natural refrigerants. Such as ethane, propane, isobutane, n-butane, ethylene and propylene. They are another more environmentally friendly option due to their low impact on the environment. They are usually used in smaller units, such as window or wall units, although they are also used in commercial and industrial refrigeration equipment. It is important to note that natural refrigerants require specialized technical training to ensure safe handling.
  • Cleaning solvents. These are used specifically for cleaning refrigeration systems, such as condensing units, evaporators and coils. At Grit, we offer Grietene EG cleaning solvent, a solvent blend not affected by Regulation 517/2014 (F-Gas) and exempt from the HFC’s levy.
  • Heat transfer fluids. This option is used in water heating and cooling mechanisms, such as heat pumps and centralized air conditioning equipment. We have Grietene ICT-32, which mixes various fluorinated components for greater efficiency.

Remember, when selecting and handling these types of substances it is important to ensure that technicians are properly trained and certified. At GRIT, our team of refrigeration experts can help you find the most suitable option for your specific needs.
